"Solid Harmony were fantastic!" was one of the comments made by an audience member last night, and they definetly were!
They
were one of the many spectacular acts that partaked in "Sing It", the
musical strand of the Newham Arts Festival, at the Barbican last night.
Joined by guest artists Jason Yarde and Eska Mtungwazi, they performed
"I Choose" and "Heavenly Father", which saw a collaboration between the Namibian Exchange Students and the choir.
Other
artists at the event included the Grand Union Orchestra, NewVIc's
Nashaa - South Asian Music Ensemble and the Newham Academy as well as
both secondary and primary schools from within Newham. The Mayor of
Newham opened the ceremony.
We all look forward to next year's event!

After a week full of running around, performing and eating, the OYO
team said their goodbyes and farewells to the LiveEd team and most
importantly Solid Harmony choir.
They
treated the choir to a couple of spectacular performances, including a
song written for Live Ed team as a thank you. The choir couldn't resist
but join in!
The choir and the three Namibian students - Fly,
Mona and Steve - had developed a special bond and found it hard to say
goodbye. Although, that didn't stop them making one last visit to the
local chicken shop.
This is what Jessica had to say about the project. (From www.liveed.org)
“When the people from Namibia came to England it made me more aware
about how different their life is back there, but also how that no
matter where we live we are all basically the same. I was able to talk
to them about their life in Namibia and see whether they thought that
English life was any different.
I really enjoyed re-hearsing and
performing with them at the Barbican and visiting them at their hotel
as it allowed me to talk to them more. They were constantly comparing
about the way we walk so fast and it seems as though we are always in a
rush to go no where.
I really enjoyed performing one of their
songs as it allowed me to see how disease and poverty can really
destroy a community, but they were always upbeat. It made me appreciate
how fortunate I am to not have to go through certain things which for
them could be an everyday occurrence.”

3 students and 3 members of staff from the Ombetja Yehinga
Organization (OYO) Namibia will be visiting London for the Newham Arts
festival in June. This is thanks to the funding offered by Unesco, Newham Council, Air Namibia and the British High Commission in Namibia.
The students and staff will follow a tight schedule of visiting
educational and performance establishments, meeting Newham based
students, leading workshops, performing and shadowing Newham based
professionals. They will mainly be hosted by Newham 6th Form College
(NewVIc) and Newham Schools.OYO, London Welcomes you!
Solid
Harmony are extremely excited and look forward to collaborating on
their signature piece 'I Choose' (co- writen by Eska Mtungwazi &
Jason Yarde) as well as dance and drama pieces.
Look out for reviews and pictures from their visit this week.

On Thursday, Solid Harmony opened NewVIc's
Annual Fashion Show. The event saw a culmination of work by students as
well as performance from students of all levels.
On behalf of
Jane and the team, allow me to say a big well done to everyone that
took part in the performance. It was brilliant and really captured the
spirit of the event! |
I was just about to say...... 'I hope you are all enjoying the sun'
until I looked outside and realised that it is a slightly dark shade of
grey outside. Oh well, I'm sure the sun will come out to play again
very soon :-)
This is just a quick note to let you know that
although we have been keeping quite low key lately it is simply for
your benefit! The choir have thrown their full force into creating new
and wonderful pieces to add to their repertoire, Jane has actually had
to tell them to take a break. Don't worry, we don't want to cap the
talent of the members, but the choir have a number of performances
coming up.
First is NewVIc's annual fashion show. The event takes place this Thursday evening at
the college and is open for everyone to attend. More details are to
follow.
Then next month the choir will be performing as part of
the Newham Arts Festival at the prestigious Barbican venue in London.
The 19th of June will see Solid Harmony sing as part of 'Sing It',
the musical leg of the 'Bring It'.
And finally in July, the
Newham Townshow will be back in full force. The choir will perform a
set on the 15th of July. Again, more details are to come.
Well, I must sign off now, but do keep popping back for the latest on the choir. Also, don't forget to pop by the MySpace page and check us out!
Take Care! |

Hey all!
Today Solid Harmony were adding some final touches to their new repertoire. Here is what Priscilla had to say:
"Today has been going very well. We are starting to work together -
choir and the band, and everyone was able to give their personal
opinions and offer feedback on ideas. I have really enjoyed writing
this song and I can't wait to perform it!"
The choir have been extremely busy during these past few weeks. The
choir have been 'in the studio' recording 'I Choose to Live' for the
upcoming NewVIc CD. They were specially invited by the college to take
part in the project, as the co-ordinators wanted the "unique and
dynamic' sound of the choir.
For more info on the CD, send us a message or contact Chrystal Lecointe
(Arts Administrator - NewVIc) via her email address
