It may be Friday the 13th but the only thing that's scary is
how busy Solid Harmony is getting. With at least one gig a month plus next
week's singing exams, they are not going to get any sleep until August.
Next Friday will see 17 students (our biggest group yet!) take part in a
singing exam. For most of the group it will be their first time entering and
they have really taken up the challenge. For some it has been a new experience
having to learn songs from as far back as the 1800's as well trying to fit 5
songs into their repertoire.
I know they will do a great job - Good Luck Guys!!!
As I mentioned earlier, the choir are also managing to fit in 5 gigs over the
next 4 months!!! You have NO EXCUSE to miss one!
Their first performance will be as part of a Make Poverty History Event at
Stratford Circus on the 21st April (the day after the singing exam!). Then just
11 days later, on the 2nd of May, the choir will be featuring at UEL's Mayfest!
June the 3rd will see the choir perform at the Launch Event for the Newham Arts
Festival, with the official evening taking place on the 5th at the Royal
Festival Hall.
In July, the choir will once again make an appearance at the Mayor's show, make sure we see you there!
As usual, I'm out of breath just typing this for you guys!
We all look forward to seeing you at the shows.

On Tuesday 16th January, Solid Harmony sang as part of a
massed choir backing the Legendary Hugh Masekela and the Jazz Jamaican All
Stars, in celebration of the Music Manifesto 'State of Play' event at the
Roundhouse. This was an important national landmark in Music education,
marking a commitment for further funding for singing in Education from the
government, as well as keeping the importance of music making high on the
political agenda.
The Choir's own band, Samuel Awotayo, Diân Gasper, Leon
Davis and Nathanael Watson, students from Newham Sixth Form College (NewVIc)
and Royal Docks Community School had the opportunity to pick up some tips
from the Jazz Jamaican All Stars, 'jamming' with Hugh Masekela himself before the rehearsal with the choir began.
For
some members, this was the second time they have performed with Hugh
and they felt that this was even better than the last time.

conference. Senior Members from Year 10 upwards will also be preparing
for their singing exams in April.
In June the choir will again
contribute to the Newham Arts Education Festival with a new set of

The choir performed an outstanding set at Newham's Shining Through
Awards last Friday and even had time to include a costume change. They
sang their own composition, Reach For Your Dreams, their own
arrangement of "Lawenche", a Ghanaian clapping song, and one of their
favourites written by the wonderful Paul Watson, Are You ready.
Solid Harmony were specially invited to perform at the prestigious event as 'they represent what the awards are all about'.

Last night saw Solid Harmony's first solo performance and they had the
audience smiling, clapping and cheering all evening! The 'Chicken and Rice'
special had people chuckling with glee in their seats as the choir continued to
improvise and develop their own 'Chicken and Rice' theme!
The choir
surprised themselves with just how much repertoire they knew and how well they
were performing. The Band also kept the pace and played some great riffs and
grooves!
One parent said "I can't believe how good they're
getting, better every time we see them. Are they going to make a recording
soon?"
Recording has to be on the choir's next agenda! |
