Big Up to Bukky, Stefan, Jo and Hoang!
Solid Harmony is proud to celebrate the wonderful performances of our senior and Alumni members in the Royal Opera House and East London Dance Street Stories Project.
The outcome, Demon Juice
is a triumph! An extraordinary and beautifully crafted Opera pulled
together by composer John Browne in which every young performer has
clearly had and amazing time working with support from the expert
project team and have been stretched to sing, dance and perform their
roles with commitment and skill.
Thank you to East London Dance
and the Royal Opera House for continuing to create these amazing
opportunities for young people in Newham and East London.

Hello!!!
Hope the weather is not too gloomy out there where you are. Let me just get straight into catching you all up.
September
was a busy month for the choir with 3 performances as well as welcoming
over 10 new members to the choir. They started off the month with the
Sing For Peace event, then just two days later, they performed at Queen Mary's, then they set the mood with an inspirational and positive performance at NewVIc's Special Diploma Evening.
Last week saw the second - and final - part of a partnership with Tanzanian artist Cassius Maganga.
He worked with the choir on two pieces, one which is in his native
language and the second being one they have developed together. The
choir are now in the process of finishing the writing process and are
now getting together to polish it all up. He integrated call and
response as well body beat techniques and even managed to get the band
singing too!!! |

It’s that time of year where everything slows down in the
lead up to the summer and everyone is excited as its the start of a long
holiday, but alas – no rest for Solid Harmony. They had a staggering four gigs
lined up in July alone! However they still managed to have some “Choir Time”
and hold their first Solid harmony Achievement Awards.
With the help of Jack Petchey Funding, the students were able to hand out
certificates as an appreciation of their hard-work, dedication and commitment
to the choir. The newcomers and musicians were not left empty-handed and were
awarded for their integral contribution to the choir this year. Paul Watson was
there as our special guest and said: “You guys have achieved so much and have
grown a lot. I can’t wait to work with you all again!”
With the celebrations and partying over, it was back to work. The choir managed
to perform at their gigs with gusto and pride and end the year with a bang.
Pictures from the events at Forest Gate, The Credon Centre, Central Park and West Ham
Memorial Park, so keep
you eyes peeled.
Signing Off – Have a great summer and stay safe.

It was such an honour and privilege for Solid Harmony to have performed at
the Royal Festival Hall as part of the Newham Arts Festival last Tuesday.
They carried themselves with maturity and confidence and sang their best yet.
They set an example to the hundreds of young singers there as part of the massed
choir, demonstrating what is possible with commitment, mutual support and hard
work!
It was also a real privilege to share the stage with two visiting young
people from Namibia, Valerie and Barnabas. The choir was highly impressed by
their cool! Congratulations all! Here are just some of the comments received by
email after the event:
"... It is invidious to highlight
particular items but we both felt your Namibian pieces were very special. They
were absolutely right for the young people and they performed them extremely
well. Their visit to Namibia must have been an unforgettable experience."
Peter Renshaw,
Guildhall
"... I was so
moved to see the kids swaying and clapping and singing with such confidence and
joy!
And I have
to say, Solid Harmony were supremely impressive!" Ben Spencer, RFH
"... By the way THE SOLID HARMONY CHOIR AND YOU WERE ANOTHER highlight
for me and my
friends. Wow and wow again. What singing! There was a moment when you
all gathered energy and stillness and presence between the first and
second songs... The energy and power and musicality was amazingly
potent, just at the BEFORE the song moment. I hope you noticed the volume of the applause and cheering for
your group! IT was LOUD!" Bridget Belgrave, Liferesources
"... As for your Solid Harmony choir.
Beautifully expressive, musically tight, impressive, confident, and a very, very
solid group of impressive young singers. They were the highlight for
me. Congratulations". Shirley Keen, East End Opera

Hi all!
A big congratulations to all of the students that took
part in this year's singing exams. All of the students gained a Pass or
above in their grades and have all excelled their own expectations. We
are all very proud of them!
However, they are not able to rest
just yet. The choir have been busy preparing for their performance as
part of this year's Newham Arts Festival. They have been hard at work
learning a wide range of repertoire for the 5th of June and they also
have a special surprise planned, so make sure you are in the audience!
The choir still have lots in store for you over the next couple of months so do keep your eyes peeled!
Take Care. |
